19 Apr Is Search Engine Submission Necessary?
In most cases submitting your site to search engines is no longer necessary because most of the major search engines follow links to crawl and index web pages. Logically, this means a single inbound link from an already indexed page will result in the search engine identifying your web page. If the page that gets indexed links to other pages within your site all of the linked pages will also get indexed.
What does this really mean for you as a website owner? It means that inbound linking is extremely important. In terms of search engine optimization the ability to acquire back-links is probably the most important SEO function. Of course, theoretically, a website owner should not need to hunt for links. Other websites will want to link to your website information if the content on your site is interesting, useful, important and of high quality. Quality content that people want to link to is the foundation for the Google PageRank algorithm in fact.
Does Submitting Your Site Help?
Submitting your site may not really help but one thing is for certain-it will not hurt to submit it. There is no cost associated with submitting your site to most search engines including the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. If an SEO company tells you there is a fee for submitting sites this is probably incorrect information and a sign that you should steer clear of using that agencies services.
Submitting your site to the major search engines is easy and only takes a few minutes to do so you really do not have anything to lose by taking the time to submit your site.
How Do I know If My Site has Been Automatically Indexed?
It is very easy to find out if your site has been indexed. Just type your website address into the search engine and see if it comes up in the results pages. If it doesn’t then you should submit it manually. In my own experience the major search engines pick up new sites very quickly. I just created a new site a few weeks ago and the site was picked up almost immediately after publishing it.

Yahoo’s search engine is actually powered now by Microsoft’s Bing search engine. This change occurred in 2010. This means that when you submit your site to Bing it will also show up in Yahoo’s search results. So, refer to submitting your site to Bing for the actual process.
